ranch history

Jason and I first met while working cattle for a neighbor back in the fall of 2010. We continued to run into each other over the course of a year while helping other neighbors work their cattle. In hindsight, I should have sensed a theme starting! But being a young woman from the east coast, working cattle on the great plains seemed “fun!” Well, almost fourteen years later, I’m still having “fun” on the great plains doing cattle things with Jason and our family.

Since I’ve known Jason, he has had the dream to market Diamond V’s beef directly to the consumer. For many years, the ranch has been having its own cattle processed to fill the freezers of the Jochim family and hired hands. As extended family and friends got to try our beef, more and more names would be added to the list for wholes, halves, and quarters. With time, Jason’s dream soon became our family’s dream as well! So, back in February of 2024 we decided to take the leap, acquire our retail license, and begin renovating a small storefront space in our little hometown of Selfridge, ND.

We are encouraged by where this last year has led us and are ecstatic to see where the future takes us!

Undeniably, Diamond V Ranch and Beef would not be where it is today without the help and dedication of so many. The Jochim Family consists of Jason and Jacqueline Jochim, their four daughters [Novalee, Cydni (CT), Cody, and Chevelle,] as well as Jason’s mother, Renei Jochim.
Diamond V Ranch and Beef is fitted with a committed crew with common goals. All four of the Jochim daughters contribute in their own way to the ranch. Nova and CT’s skill set are absolutely invaluable. Be it combing through EPD’s when selecting bulls, combining, haying, feeding, fixing fence; you name it, they do it!! Cody and Chevelle’s love and enthusiasm for the ranch is unmatched! They help keep us inspired and remind us to look for the “fun” in everyday life.
Since the union of she and Butch back in 1975, Renei has been an absolute pillar at Diamond V Ranch. Through managing all of the books, to payroll, to cooking countless meals, to even predator control, Renei is truly our utility player! No doubt she keeps the blood pumping through the ranch!
In this small knit town of Selfridge, neighbors become like family and Rusty Kraft and Seth Harrison are no different. Both have been lifelong friends of Jason and the Jochim family and work as hired hands here at the ranch. They help ensure things run smoothly here at the ranch and help out wherever they are needed.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the help and support of our extended family, friends, and neighbors. All of whom take time away from their busy lives and schedules to come help and support us however they can. The Henry Gayton Family particularly has been a steadfast support for many generations, which we are greatly appreciative of.

Where it all began

Though myself and our beef business may be newcomers, Diamond V Ranch and the Jochim’s have a rich history spanning back to the late 1920s in the Selfridge area. In 1927, Great-Grandpa Joseph Jochim first moved he and his family to the Selfridge area. A decade or so later, the family settled on a homestead that is located on what later became known as the Diamond V Ranch. The origins of the Diamond V Ranch and brand itself began when Grandpa Valentine Jochim first registered the brand. The oldest known documentation of the brand dates back to 1950. In 1952, Jason’s father Ernest (Butch) was born and through the years the ranch began to grow and develop. Butch and his brother, Speed, helped diversify the ranch in many ways, but one of the most influential changes came when the family decided to switch from a hereford based herd, to limousin bulls and angus cows in the late 1980s.
Today we continue the tradition with our 4 daughters, and take great pride in our cattle, our legacy, and our ranch.
